Swing Into Spring Special

We have been open for a while now and due to recent price reductions in aluminum, we are offering a “Swing Into Spring” special for anyone with an estimate, past, present, or immediate future. We have cut our overall pricing due to the price reduction and wish to pass this savings along to our customers. If you have an estimate, even from last year, we will be happy to revisit the quote and discount the savings depending on size and scope, in some cases as much as 15% or more. Our most recent estimates done from earlier this year have been discounted somewhat already, but we can always work with you to help reduce the overall costs as much as possible given the new lower aluminum stock rates. If you are now searching around for a reputable, high quality company to do your gutter work, please keep us in mind and give us a call and we will work with you as closely as possible on the scope of your job as well as the bottom line as well. We service the following areas: Acton, Andover, Arlington, Ayer, Boxboro, Berlin, Bolton, Billerica, Bedford, Boylston, Burlington, Carlisle, Concord, Chelmsford, Clinton, Devens, Dunstable, Fitchburg, Forge Village, Framingham, Groton, Grafton, Graniteville, Harvard, Hudson, Lancaster, Leominster, Lowell, Lexington, Littleton, Lincoln, Lunenburg, Marlboro, Maynard, Nagog, Northboro, Natick, Pepperell, Shirley, Shrewsbury, Southboro, Still River, Sterling, Stow, Sudbury, Townsend, Tewksbury, Tyngsboro, Wayland, Westford, Westboro, Weston, Wellesley, Westminster. Remember, our estimates are always free and the quality of our workmanship and materials is second to none, so give us a call today and take advantage of the new price reductions!!

Spring 2016 and General Musings from our Owner Joe Alo

Robert, once again your professionalism blows my mind in that you find enough time to keep up with all the daily estimates and organizing the scheduling, while keeping such a positive attitude.
Last year 2015 was a great year for us in that we carried a four week backlog of work from early spring to the end of the year. We sure did cash in on lots of systems that came down over a tough winter, just goes to show you that our systems are indeed that more superior and that most inexpensive systems are just that, inexpensive! It’s all about the materials you use, our estimates always include a summary cover letter, and a comparison letter, letting our customers know exactly what to expect when comparing apples to apples, our customers need to know what the differences are, because our educated customer is our best customer! Once again inexpensive bar hangers and hardware eventually lead to problems. We will still use the best materials that money can buy so that we have no issues (call backs, none!). It’s simple, supply our customers the best gutter systems that money can buy, while still being competitive in a very competitive business. Yes, we loose opportunities to our competitors because we cost a few more dollars to install our systems but with no call backs and happy customers, isn’t that what it’s really about? No headaches.
We know that when we complete a job and back out the driveway there is a sense of great satisfaction that the work done was done to the best of our abilities and that we treated each job as it was our own homes. In some cases we found we were challenged weekly with customers that wanted our services, but were looking for a savings or a discount and we for the most part worked the numbers a bit so that both the customer who wanted us to do provide the service felt happy saving a few bucks. In most cases we found customers expediting our estimates as they had two or three others in hand, but heard off us from referrals, the BBB, Angies’ List, Action Unlimited magazine or neighborhood networks of preferred vendors, they read about us, did their homework, compared apples to apples and was then where very happy to receive the estimate only to find out that we were the lowest price! Always a great feeling that we are doing things right and that we have holding our prices for years now.
In summary last year was a blur and then we shut down before Christmas and the winter came, not a crazy year versus last year but gave us some time to heal up and get our heads together and do some other things besides guttering!
As each season starts its 24/7 and then you hit the wall and it comes to a end. Yes, we can work In the cold and freezing temps along with snow. We did have some emergency work to keep us tuned up here and there but winter is really no time to do installs as fascia boards cannot be scrapped, filled and painted and screwing our hardware in fascias and comer boards leads to cracking the wood and this is something we do not like to do, so in most cases we convince the customers to hang in there and wait to spring so that everything can be done to correctly without compromising a customers home.
Now that this 2016 season is upon us and so far it seems as if we might have a early spring, We have ramped up on inventory regarding our heavy duty rated Raytec (297lb!) hidden bar hangers, stainless steel hardware, aluminum strip coils for our reverse flashing (which was a huge hit as most customers are educating themselves on our website and seeing our videos, and know now that leaks behind gutters are not a gutter issue but a roof related issue). This magic piece of custom bend flashing can stop leaks and keep fascia’s dry and keep them from staining (sometime called tiger stripping).
Robert and I have been out doing estimates starting as early February 2016 as the weather allowed us and we found that our reputation has grown and has spread out further beyond our normal territory, in towns such as Woburn, Wilmington, Tewksbury, Billerica, Winchester and Burlington. Also out South into Hudson, Stowe, Bolton, Berlin, Marlboro, Sudbury, Wayland, Southboro, Westboro, Boylston and Shrewsbury.
Where as our wheelhouse is Littleton, Harvard, Acton, Concord, Carlisle, Maynard, Bedford, Boxboro, Westford, Chelmsford, Groton, Ayer, Shirley, Pepperrell, Dunstable, Lunenburg, and Leominster. I’m sure I missed a few that’s why most of the towns we service are at the bottom of our website at https://www.alogutters.com.
We will start to venture out this week as the weather allows us to knock the rust off and get in a few days here and there as the phones are starting to ring and online estimates have been starting to leak in. This is good sign that we could be off to another great season, and I as I spoke before about locations, February 29 we are heading out to Shirley, West Townsend, and back to Ayer, finishing up in Littleton. Then Tuesday March 1st we heading out to Bolton, Concord, and Sudbury. We are also still offering pre booked work with a discount UP TO 10% depending the size and scope of the work to be done.
I’m guessing that within the next few weeks it will almost be back to normal in that we will be cranking 40 hrs plus a week. We look forward to the challenge as we all enjoy the spring and its new opportunities.
Our dedicated and experienced crew of men are also all coming back and we are going to adding another worker to train, a nice green apple that we can take time in training and make sure that it’s done right the first time. We tried other so called experience gutter journeyman, only to find out that they can’t cut it with our extreme care to detail and ensuring that they can cross every t and dot every i. We found out in most cases that they can’t be retrained, they resist because they are accustomed in doing things their way and really can not be broke of bad habits. So a green apple has no experience and or bad habits and within a couple years they are doing things exactly like the pain in the ass or may I say fussy owner, me!
Mike our foreman has been with us for 7 years now, our downspout guy Jon has four years under his belt and our general all around helper Mitch is heading into his third year along with me, who will be 52 years old March 10th and is still on every job cutting gutter and working with crew to ensure that each job is done to the best of our abilities while ensuring to our customers that we were the right company in providing them a lifetime seamless rain control system.
Robert Smiley our estimator is what I consider the best estimator in the business! He courteous, punctual and pays attention to each individual customers requests and does not oversell. He is a very knowledgeable person in that some house are very difficult to provide seamless gutters and has a wealth of knowledge on other options as to getting the job estimated and done correctly, not to mention he has a masters degree from Perdue!
His attention to detail, accompanied with our hand drawn detailed estimates makes our customers feel great in that they now exactly what to expect when the crew and I arrive to do the job. Other than a few downspouts changes or downspout locations that really need to be shown to the customer the day on the install to ensure both function and aesthetics are really the only changes that usually happen.
This makes our job installing seamless gutters and downspouts very easy as we know what to expect and understand exactly what the customer wants. As the owner of the company on each job, working along with the crew to ensure everything is done right brings me great satisfaction.
We are like a fine tuned instrument in that the customers call me, I receive each call as the come in via my Bluetooth (no answering machines!) while I’m actually working, as I talk to the potential customer (almost prequalifying a bit), ask the customer to hold on a few seconds so that I can conference them into office where Robert is waiting for the customer off, so that he can take down all relevant information and schedule a meeting time with the potential customer and get them the estimate they require. Once this is done, the estimate is drawn up, scanned and emailed over to the customer along with our detailed cover letter recap of the meeting and accompanied with our comparison letter.
I always hear from customers that they are surprised that someone picked up the phone call? And that they thought they we going to have to leave a voicemail? As they mention that they are calling other gutter companies for pricing and have not heard back, or had an appointment with the other company that didn’t call back or didn’t show up on the agreed time? I can’t understand the competition in most cases! If you have the opportunity and are lucky enough to be get a phone call, pick it up! It’s a opportunity, what’s wrong with them?
Not us, the customer is happy to talk to a live person, then are impressed that Owner is answering the phone, and then being forwarded into the estimating office so they get the appointment with Robert and get a price!
It’s pretty simple no matter what goes on during the course of the daily grind, when a customer contacts you, you pick up the phone given the opportunity and or return the email within a few minutes! You snooze you lose in this business.
We feel a we have a leg up on our competition in that customer service is simply number one!!!
If the opportunity is handled every time this way, the customer feels as if they are in good hands, it leads to a very great feeling that we do really care, and if we are so prompt in this action that our work MUST reflect this as well, and believe me it does! Pride in a job well done from start to finish is what I have strived for since starting the business 15 years ago, and I’m not going stop.
We are ready to work, ready for estimates, ready to get it done, while installing the very best rain control systems that money can buy.
Please check out our website https://www.alogutters.com for details and please call with any questions and or concerns you may have, regarding budgets, materials, timing, etc. etc. Also check our reviews on Angies’ list and the BBB, see want other customers have said about us. We DO NOT REQUIRE DEPOSITS, as most other companies do, all we expect is payment be made in full after the job is complete.
I’m always available at 508-572-5557 or Robert at 508-308-8366, or if you feel more comfortable with emailing us at joe@alogutters.com or robert@alogutters.com. We are located in Littleton MA and are fully licensed and insured. We provide certificate of insurance Immediately if you require one and are also happy sending you references. Also please know that we have a great preferred vendor list of other service companies that I have known for years that may help you with other services such as roofers, carpenters, painters, and many other services that we can supply to you if you are new to the area and want trusted sources.
In closing PLEASE remember that early spring bring us opportunities to clean and flush gutter systems, this is a great way to ensure that everything currently is working fine. If there are any problems or issues we can talk about what may need to be done as we are really evaluating the current system as we clean and flush it and can provide an estimate on site for any rework or tendering your current system may have. Who is better suited to do a thorough cleaning, flushing and evaluation of a current gutter system?
The answer is? Us. Alo Seamless Gutters, We are professional gutter installers, and our slogan is we are the rain control authority.
We are not like average cleaning companies who have guys cleaning out leaves just from the gutters and not checking the elbows that connect to the downspouts that bring the water to the ground. Not flushing with water, it’s impossible to ensure checking for leaks in end caps, miters, downspouts, blown out seams on backs of downspouts and downspouts falling off or detaching from gutter outlets etc. etc. They are there for cleaning the leaves from the gutters and really not looking at it that way we look at it, thoroughly!
Maybe it’s time to stop the two cleaning a year? and invest and add our Real gutter guard product if applicable or stop those drips and leaks from behind every gutter with the addition of our custom reverse flashing.
Product Videos are available on both these items as mentioned on our website, just visit main page and you will find Reverse Flashing and Real Gutter guard products in action!
Thanks and we hope to be hearing from you soon.
Sincerely, Joseph L Alo and the rest of the crew at Alo Seamless Gutters.

Fall Is Here and Other Thoughts

It’s been a while since I’ve been able to catch my breath and write anything, but now’s a great time to get caught up a little. Joe and “the boys” have been straight out hard at it pulling down and replacing old aluminum and vinyl gutter systems, re-painting fascias, replacing downspouts, and installing great new trouble-free seamless systems. We’ve all been all over in the past few months, from Lexington to Wellesley to Framingham to Marlboro to Stow to Lunenburg. It’s been an extremely busy yet very productive season for all of us, and for that we wish to thank all our customers. We’ve been running a healthy backlog all season, and we can only urge you to get any work booked with us now if you’ve been putting it off – time is growing short. I actually saw a Christmas commercial last Sunday! Our daylight hours are waning quickly and the temperatures are sure to soon start falling (witness the recent cool nights), and all these factors will limit our ability to work long productive days, making a short season even shorter. I say again, if you’re in need of our services, give us a call right away before it’s too late and booking slots before the end of the season are all gone. Yes, we do have several weeks left so we’d love to get your work done before it’s too late. Call us – estimates are always free.
On another topic, we’ve been installing a lot of aluminum reverse flashing lately. We cannot stress how important this “magic strip” is for most gutter installations. You know those pesky drips you may get from behind your gutters? This is a product that completely eliminates them, period. It’s a special piece of contour bent aluminum that goes behind the existing drip edge and directly into the gutter, ensuring no drips from behind. Please see this website, click on Reverse Flashing on the Home page, and it has some great information and videos as to what it is and how it works – even (my favorite) one video showing a gutter both with and without reverse flashing. It truly is a great product that will help save your fascias from rot and/or the dreaded tiger striping (the black streak marks on the fascia boards under/behind the gutters). It is a great investment for the best protection of your single biggest investment – your home. Check it out.
A quick shout out and thank you to our great crew, headed by the inimitable Joe Alo who is truly an artisan of gutters. Mike, our foreman, thanks for keeping the pace up and getting out great quality work. Jon, our premiere downspout guy – thanks for your hard efforts and for doing some very large and involved downspout jobs recently. Mitch, our general purpose man, thanks for your work ethic, ability to understand and suggest, and your ability to just keep on keepin’ on. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – many many thanks for doing the right thing and the best job each and every time. It makes my job so much easier when I know that even if I don’t get the estimate completely change free (usually due to unforeseen issues, but hey I’m also human and I do make some errors once in a while), we can all pull together to get the right and proper work done in the best interests of our customers. It is a pleasure to work with such dedicated professionals.

It’s August Already!

Just want to check in quickly as we have been very very busy this season and still currently have a 4-1/2 to 5 week backlog of work, which has been steady all year. Joe Alo and the crew have been hard at it all over Eastern and Central Mass – from Lexington to Framingham to Shrewsbury to Gardner and all locales in between. We’ve been involved in some great specialty work (see pics below) and had some challenges thrown our way after last Winter, but we are still going strong. There has been a lot of gutter re-attachments and replacements due to the past winter months, as well as some challenging larger projects. We have completely re-guttered Idylwilde Farms in Acton, tweaked and replaced a lot of components at Little Brook Apartments in Hudson (8 large buildings), and are looking to help out the new owners of Dover Heights Apartments in Acton as well (6 large apartment buildings). All said, Joe and the “boys” have put forth an amazing amount of top-quality professional work over the past few months as witnessed by our growing popularity and demand among more discerning homeowners. Our bread and butter are still the homeowners we service, and we will continue to make each and every one a top priority. So don’t put off getting your gutters repaired, replaced, or adding new ones – it’s the best investment to save erosion of the foundation and water intrusion out there. Give us a call today – estimates are always free, and we do respond in an extremely timely manner.

Spring is Finally Here!

What a long and difficult winter we’ve had. Spring is finally here, however, and now we’re open fully and working every day. We’ve actually been at it for the last 3 weeks, concentrating on repairing and replacing the winter storm damages for many customers who were subjected to downed gutters, cracked fascias, and bent downspouts due to Mother Nature (please see our blog, Winter Blues 2014-2015 immediately below this one). While we truly sympathize with our customers over the damage this past winter season caused, we can honestly say that 99.99% of our systems, totaling in the thousands now, were completely unaffected by the heavy snow and ice dams. We did have 3 of our gutters suffer some damage (taken partially down), but that was due to the homeowner’s not removing their snow and ice loads between storms. (Routine maintenance of any gutter system is a must, including removing snow and ice dams in the winter as well as regular cleanings and flushings). Why did ours stay up and many of our competitors fail? This is due to the simple fact that we use the best, strongest, most heavy duty materials available – from the thickness of our gutters (.032″, thickest available for residential applications) to the high strength of our bar hangers – 297 pound test each! You can literally hang from them (see pic in Gallery/Our Products). Because of the way we install and because of the strength of the materials we insist upon using, our systems survived intact this past extremely abnormal winter when a lot of others failed. We can’t say this enough to any of our customers – if you want your system to perform correctly while lasting a very long time, have us do the work. We are not the least expensive but we are competitive in pricing and truly believe that what we use and how we use it sets us far ahead of the competition. Simply put, we don’t cut corners. Our owner/operator Joe Alo has instilled this in everyone who works for him – we do it right, we do it well, and we don’t ever cut corners. Period. Again, our competitors’ systems have come down, torn off, taken down fascia and soffits, broken windows, and bent downspouts this past winter, and our systems have not. That’s a great track record for us.
Just a quick shout-out to Joe Alo and our steady crew of professionals – Mike Racca, our crew foreman (and an extremely knowledgeable, expert installer himself) and Jon and Mitch. They’ve been working hard removing old damaged gutters (and fascia sections) and installing new ones, and also repairing minor damaged systems as well. They’ve been all over recently, Concord, Carlisle, Lexington, Maynard, Sudbury, Stow, Harvard, Westford, Groton, Ayer, Shirley, Littleton, and even out to Framingham. We’ve had many satisfied customers recently as we move along and get as many people’s damage taken care of as quickly as we can. And even though we are now working on our previous Spring pre-bookings from last Fall, we will continue to address any winter damage issues in a timely and professional manner. So if you’ve had some gutter damage from this past winter, or you’re interested in getting some new or replacement gutters put on, give us a call. Our estimates are always free, and our service is always professional. Don’t settle for low-priced, bargain material work just to save a few bucks when for a little extra you can have us install the best and longest lasting system that is available in our current market area. Call us today!

Winter Blues 2014-2015

Having recently been out assessing the state of gutter disrepair after this horrendous winter, we feel it best to inform our customers of the damage(s) that ice dams and excessive roof snow can and do cause, as well as what we are seeing.

Tree Split from Falling Ice Dam

Tree Split from Falling Ice Dam

Ice dams form along your roofline when the snow on the roof melts, runs down the roof, and then re-freezes at the uninsulated edge of the roof, forming a barrier or dam. With the weather we’ve experienced over this last winter of 2014-2015, especially during the month of February 2015 – sunny days (which can melt snow on a roof, even when it’s below freezing) and very cold nights, these are the perfect conditions for ice dams to form.

You must take extra caution, however. Ice dams will block up gutters and downspouts and the extra weight can rip the gutter down, many times including the fascia and the soffitry as well.

The ice itself can also loosen your shingles and cause water to back up inside the home – most unpleasant! This is why it is important to be very diligent about clearing any snow from your roof. See some of these pictures of just what this past season has brought us.

Approaching End Of Season 2014

First of all, I’d like to thank all of our customers for making this year our best yet! Joe and the crew, Mike our foreman, Jon, and Mitch, have all been really working hard to get through a jam packed schedule and several weeks of booked work. They’ve even been out in the rain to keep us on track for the remainder of the year! Great job, guys – keep up the terrific, professional work you’ve always done. Our Angie’s List and BBB ratings reflect the quality of service you guys deliver consistently, so thank you for making my job a lot easier. We do have a few more weeks to get through, however. We are closing down for a winter holiday break around December 16th-17th or so for a much needed rest, and that is optimistic in that it assumes that the weather will be fully cooperative between now and then. I do need to remind everyone of the early storm we got last year that shut us down 2 weeks early, so without a special crystal ball, these are our plans right now.
So what does this mean for our customers? We’ve been inundated with calls lately about trying to get work done last minute, and we have taken as many as we can for right now. Unfortunately, we are completely booked out for the rest of the season with very little wiggle room for even smaller jobs. We are, however, running an end-of-year pre-booking “special” for anyone who decides to guarantee their work for Spring of 2015 when we re-open for next year’s season. We are offering a discount of UP TO 10% based on size and scope to anyone who pre-books for a guaranteed Spring installation. So what exactly does this mean? It means that if you pre-book now, we will not only guarantee the work gets done next Spring but also that the pricing will not increase and you will even get a savings off the total proposal. The exact amount is based using a sliding scale, so the larger the job, the larger the discount (of up to 10%). While we cannot know the exact amount right now because fuel and aluminum pricing fluctuates over the short winter months, we can give you a ballpark of what we are anticipating your savings to be. We’ve already got several customers who have pre-booked, and we’d love to add more to the list. This is always a win-win situation for both our customers and ourselves in that it saves our customers some hard earned money on their project with a guaranteed booking date and it also provides us with work as soon as we re-start, so everyone goes away a winner!
As for wanting work done next Spring specifically, we are still out providing free estimates year ’round and will gladly set up an appointment to come and take a look at any new projects coming our way. We’ve been doing a lot of work in the Marlboro, Sudbury, Southborough, Northborough, and Framingham areas recently, and we appreciate all the requests coming in for new installations and replacement systems of seamless aluminum gutters and downspouts. Give us a call if you have a project you’d like done.

Fall 2014 and Spring 2015 Pre-Booking Discounts

Well, it’s that time of year again when the days are getting shorter and so is the guttering season. We’ve had a lot of customers recently come to the realization that winter is fast approaching and that the gutter work they put off while trying to enjoy what summer we did have, well it’s past time to get their work done before it’s too late. As of this posting, October 2, 2014, we are about 3-1/2 to 4 weeks out for scheduling as it is, which really only leaves us about 6 weeks left to book any new work before either Christmas comes or the snow flies, whichever comes first. Last year we got hit with a snowstorm in early December that effectively shut us down about 2 weeks early for the year. On the other hand, 3 years ago we were able to work right through most of the winter. However, we cannot predict the weather longterm and so have no way of knowing just how much longer we can accept work for this fall and extend the season. That all being said, read on for a creative alternative.
So let’s face it, you’ve put off the gutters until the last minute. We can’t blame you – they’re not especially pretty, they can be a bit more money than expected depending on the configuration, and most people don’t truly understand how important they are or how the system functions. And the name – gutters – is not a particularly “tasteful” word. Now, with winter approaching soon and the mulch splattered against the side of your home, maybe a little water intrusion in the basement, deep noticeable drip lines all along the home, and the memories of a very large and very slick ice sheet across the walk and driveway makes you want to get the work done before it’s too late. Right now you still can, but time is running out.
We are offering an alternative solution to those who are willing to wait a while longer. Last year, we started accepting pre-bookings for the following Spring when we resume work and it worked out very well for both our customers and ourselves. We are offering a discount of up to 10% based on size and scope of work, to any customer who chooses to wait and pre-book for the Spring of 2015. (We have already had a few who have taken advantage of this offer.) Please be aware that the discount is based on a sliding scale and the lower the pricing the less the discount. Simply said, small jobs will be discounted less than large ones. We also cannot say an exact percentage at this time due to uncontrollable/unforeseeable events like a rise in fuel pricing or yet another rise in aluminum prices. We will, however, be able to give you a ballpark estimate of what the savings will be which will then be finalized when we contact you again in the springtime for scheduling. This alternative allows the winter months to recuperate from the season, get the financing in order, be at the top of our installation list, and also save some bucks. It also relieves any pressures you may have as to getting the guttering off your plate, so to speak.
So when do we start up again next year? you may well ask. Because we are so weather dependent, we cannot say for certain. Based on our history, it is usually late March to early April (this year it was April 1st), but again, if the winter is mild and somewhat snow-free, we’ll work as we can.
We think this is a good deal, and we’re hoping that you do too! It helps us to get up and going early, and it helps you with a guaranteed slot and some savings (which we all can use). So if you’ve been putting off getting that estimate (or have one from a while ago), then give us a call now. We’ll work with you as best we can, and with the springtime alternative, possibly save you some money. And that’s always a good thing.
Estimates are free, and we do provide them year ’round. Last winter I was out several times measuring people’s home in the snow and ice, but hey, that’s what we do. So give us a call today, it doesn’t cost anything to get you on the road to proper rain control management.
A quick shout-out to Joe Alo and the crew – Mike, Jon, and Mitch. They’ve been working hard lately trying to fulfill all the bookings we’ve had, and they’ve been doing a great job recently in Tyngsborough, Bolton, Stow, Clinton, and Lancaster. Tomorrow they start on a large 6″ job (that’s commercial sized gutter for the uninitiated – like what you see on very large office/retail buildings) over in Boxborough that’s both challenging and rewarding. Mitch is our newest crew member, and from what Joe tells me, he’s working out just fine – a quick study with very good skills. Jon has been with us now for a while and is doing quite well and I really appreciate his hard work. Mike, our foreman, has taken the firm lead of the crew more and more and has really helped out and stepped up to the tasks – thanks Mike, you and the guys make it easy for me to sell a great product installed by true, caring professionals. Keep up the great work!! And a special thank you to Joe Alo. Without your help and guidance (and fussyness) we wouldn’t be anywhere. Your ethical and honest approach to all your dealings, coupled with your years of guttering experience and your insight into complex rain control issues is second to none in the business. As you know, I come from a family of “gutterers” and grew up with it (albeit a different time and different installation techniques with somewhat different materials), and I’ve seen many people, including my own father, who knew a lot about the guttering business and rain control issues, but your knowledge and insights are truly some of the best I’ve ever seen. You have elevated the unsophisticated (gutters and downspouts) to a true art form. It’s an honor and a pleasure to work with you. And it also helps that you’re basically a pretty good guy to boot. Thank you. Let’s keep going, full steam ahead!!

The True Price Of Professional Honesty

We had a first-time home-owning customer last year who asked us out for an estimate. He recently moved into an older home and was in the process of addressing several concerns, amongst them both roofing and gutter additions. After speaking at length with the customer, we explained that the roofing should be done first before the gutters are put up as any reputable roofing company would have to remove all the gutters prior to adding a new roof and possibly re-configuring the fascia. It also makes sense that way as no matter how careful the roofers are taking down the gutter and downspout system, it then has to be put back up (which isn’t free), and all the holes have to be re-aligned as well to avoid leaks. Far from a perfect scenario, and costing more money doing it this way just doesn’t make good sense, and the roofing (or siding or painting for that matter) should really be done before any new gutter system is put up. The gutters should almost always go on at the end of any project and not prior to avoid added costs and any “errors” in re-hanging a system. And let’s face it, although not pretty, a well installed gutter system is really the final “trim” on a home as it is mounted above and over all other surfaces. Installing new gutters before roofing is a bit like someone putting make-up on and then washing their hair – it can be done, but it just doesn’t make sense that way. And the same can be said about siding and painting as well. So we gave our customer all this information as we believe in honesty and education. We could have just taken his money and done the job and let him sort through the roofing costs and potential damage to a new gutter system, but we’re not that kind of company.
All the above sounds great and we did the right thing by the customer, but guess what? The roofing company talked the homeowner into letting them put the gutters up and at a reduced cost. They explained that they were already going to be there, set-up, and could do it for much less than a professional gutter company could. Well, I have to tell you how wrong that is, both morally and professionally. First, a roofing company is expert in roofing. A gutter company, like Alo Seamless Gutters, is expert in gutter installations. We don’t do roofs, only gutters. That’s our specialty and it is what we are awful da** good at. For a company that specializes in roofing to simply add the gutters because they’re there doesn’t show any kind of commitment to either professional ethics or even their most important concern – the customer. Anyhow, a long story short, the homeowner called us back after last winter as his new roofer-installed gutters were coming down and were not only not performing at all, but also had become dangerous. He couldn’t get any satisfaction with the roofing company and is suing for damages. While they had used gutter material of decent quality, their method of fastening was marginal at best, they had used the wrong type of sealant for aluminum, and they had resorted to using inferior quality downspouts and fasteners to save a few bucks. The upshot was that the poor homeowner, whom we had taken the time to educate and inform previously, now had to pay again for a new gutter system as well as pay to have the old one removed and disposed.
So this was the ultimate cost of us being honest and above board and a not-so-honest company taking advantage of a new homeowner. But that’s not going to change our approach or our commitment to the homeowner – we will always be honest in all of our dealings, even if it means losing out sometimes. Our website is full of great information about what we do, how we do it, what is involved, all of the options, and a detailed accounting of ALL the high quality materials we use. It must be a good website, our competitors have recently copied many of our primary insights, information, and techniques That doesn’t mean we won’t continue to inform and educate, and it doesn’t mean we’re going to be any less honest. What it does mean is that we must be doing something right if others are scrambling to copy us. Just remember, you really do get what you pay for, and while you could have a GP Doctor perform your heart surgery, why take the chances?
I do want to close with a quick shout-out to our owner/operator Joe Alo and the crew – Mike, Jon, and Alex. They’ve been working hard lately keeping up with our backlog of work and rain-delays. They just completed a large fascia wrap and gutter installation in Chelmsford, and are moving on to replacing some damaged fascias before putting new gutters and downspouts up in Groton. Seems like they’ve been all over recently – Marlborough, Hudson, Stow, Bolton, Ayer, Boxborough, Acton, Westford, and of course Littleton. Keep up the good work guys – you make my job straightforward and a lot easier because of each one of yours commitment to quality.
Remember, our specialty is gutters and downspouts and the surfaces to which they are attached. We don’t do roofs or siding or landscaping or electrical work, and we like it that way. That’s what makes us the rain control specialists!
